Nearly all jobs are important and provide a net benefit to society. If you don’t think your job matters, you are sorely mistaken.
The janitor is gladly hired by the corporation to keep the office clean. Without them, the office workers would have their morale negatively affected.
The office worker is gladly hired to support the salesperson who is out gathering revenue for the company. Without them, the salespeople would have to spend some of their time not trying to sell.
The salesperson is gladly hired to spread the word on the product. Without them, less people would know about a product that will make their life better. After a long day of sales, the salesperson heads to the cafeteria for some food.
The cafeteria worker is gladly hired to provide food for everyone above, so none of them have to.
The retail worker provides services to all the above while they are off work, both to help them replenish the supply of goods they require, as well as some leisure purchases to help them be happy and refreshed.
The entertainer provides much needed joy for everyone, which is also a net benefit to society.
If you don’t think your job matters, you are dead wrong. Basic Economic theory easily proves that almost all jobs do matter and are a net benefit to society. Never forget how you treat others while working is one of the most important contributions you can give to the world. Never forget that just by doing your best in any job, you are making the world a slightly better place.
Given supply and demand in labor markets, certain jobs will require higher pay to retain specialized skillsets. Those that find themselves in these types of jobs, such as CEO’s or doctors, shouldn’t fool themselves into thinking they are the only ones important to society. If someone in a prestigious job looks down upon others, they are effectively wearing a sign on their shirt reading “I don’t understand Economics.”
