Everything Everywhere All at Once captures audiences with humor, eye watering romance, and an underlying philosophical theme contrasting Nihilism and Existentialism.
**Spoilers**
Jobu goes through multiple universes with a Nihilistic mindset, searching for some meaning that she cannot find. She conveys her belief is nothing matters, and thus everything is pointless. Throughout the movie we get glimpses of her struggle to find something meaningful, and she clearly desperately wants to find meaning, but she cannot.
Evelyn has a similar experience, going through several universes and realizing that Jobu is right that nothing matters. With the same underlying view, Evelyn finds the view of the Existentialist, that even though none of it ultimately matters, the existence of love, beauty, and family make life worth living. She sees that in many versions of the world, she may hate the very people she loves in other universes.
This segues into one of the most profound takeaways from the film: We are only a couple of decisions away from loving the people we hate in this life. We are only a couple of alterations in the timeline from having completely different levels of empathy and compassion for people we couldn’t fathom caring about.
