Yes, the meditators swear sitting on the ground and clearing the mind is an important skill, but if you are sitting on the ground, do you really need a clear mind? What is the benefit, some relaxation and the feeling of a clear mind? How does this help you outside of this situation? If you are already sitting on the ground with nothing to think about, is this really the time in your life you need to be in a flow state free of anxiety and other mental burdens?
What about other forms of meditation, such as Tai Chi? Getting into a flow state while doing simple motions is appealing; you preoccupy your mind so you can more easily get into the flow state, but most places you will be performing the Tai Chi motions are once again not the actual places you need a clear mind in your life.
So what meditation is useful?
Getting into a flow state, free of anxiety and mental burden would be quite useful when you are getting screamed at by your boss, when you are driving in dangerous conditions, or when you have a stressful due date that you need to hit. What steps can be done to meditate in these instances?
Practice makes perfect, and putting yourself in situations where you can practice being in the flow state when you actually need it is key. Try waiting three seconds at every stop light and seeing if you are able to control the heat of your skin, prevent your adrenaline from spiking, and preserve your anxiety levels as you get honked at and screamed at. Even practicing not moving forward until someone asks in a line can help keep your anxiety in check.
