The Ego’s desire to know the meaning of life.

Updated: Feb 13

We constantly ponder about why we are here and what is our purpose. Why do we want to know so badly? Would knowing even improve our lives?

If we find out the meaning of life is to go to heaven, would we then only try to be good because of this knowledge?

If we find out the meaning of life is there is none, would we become more Nihilistic?

The truth is our desire to know ultimately comes down to our ego. Yet we could eliminate any suffering attached to pondering this question if we just accept what we all know deep down:

We will never find out what the meaning of life is.

As a rationalist, I understand we could certainly make progress toward knowing our universe more, which could eventually change our perception of this question. Despite this, we almost certainly will not find out in our lifetime. We do have quite a profound opportunity to be good in life for no other reason than it is right. We can determine, subjectively, what the best, most moral version of ourself would be, and then we can strive to be it.
