Humans have an inner feeling that we want to make a big impact on the world, but this is a manifestation of the ego, as it requires us to believe we can make a big impact.
We often push for certain political candidates over others thinking it will bring huge positive impacts to the world, while failing to see the amount of ego it takes to believe that we are not wrong and that our actions will even impact the result.
We are blinded by our desire to make major impacts that we don’t even see the readily available objective ways we can create virtue in the world. If we see trash sitting on the grass, surely we feel confident that the world would be better with it cleaned up rather than sitting on the ground. Can we not agree the world is better with more kindness and simply smiling at your fellow humans?
For the very few of us that can make a major impact, such as an environmental invention, there is a good argument to pursue the virtue. For the rest of us, we will just be one small marginal person in the grand scheme of things, and it is delusional and ego driven to think we will make a major impact. Our role should be to embrace the small impacts that we know we can make and limit our ego and desires for reshaping the world in our image.
